7-15 years of Mild & Moderate level of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities are admitted in this institution. Their admission will be confirmed based on the results / reports of the screening test which include medical, psychological (Intelligent Quotient & temperaments), and other academic reports.

Special Education

Special education is the education of students with special needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Common special needs include physical disabilities ( motor impairments ), communication challenges, learning difficulties, emotional and behavioral disorders and developmental disorders. Students with these kinds of special needs are likely to benefit from special educational services, different approaches to teaching and the use of modern technology. Based on the screening test report and the current level of functioning, the institution follows an IEP ( Individualized Education Program ) and group teaching with a 1 : 8 teacher-student ratio, respectively. The institution also provides naturalistic training. Children with multiple disabilities need to be provided with speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy to rectify their deficits.

Testing and Evaluation

Students are assessed periodically in loco motor skills, activities of daily living skills, language skills, functional academics such as reading, writing and arithmetic, domestic skills, pre7 vocational skills and other personality skills. All these skills are evaluated by using FACP checklist, Teacher made checklists and other standardized assessment scales.

Planning & Re planning

Based on the performance of the children, a comprehensive plan will be prepared by special educators and discussed with parents for long term and short-term, yearly and term plan. Promotion will be given when the child achieves more than 80%- 100% in the given skills. Re-planning is also done at the end of each cycle.

According to the children’s interests and abilities, they get training in various sports and games events. The Special Olympics is an international organization that conducts multi-sport and international sports events for all disabled children throughout the year. Parents who do not have an adequate knowledge about intellectual disabilities are often misguided by relatives, society and even doctors. As a result parents bring them to us with a chief compliant of scholastic difficulty. In such cases, we identify the children by using a few screening tests and other parameters. After identification, guidance will be given to the parents to admit their children to other special schools or institutions having similar facilities and provisions, as we cannot admit all the children who come for admission.

LIFT is a unit that serves as a window for creating open employment opportunities in private sector for adult students with mild-level learning disabilities who are educated in our special education stream. They are placed in private sector including corporate companies and industries.9 Their age should not be less than 18.They are given on-the job-training and follow up periodically. Their salaries are kept in a separate bank account and are jointly operated by the Guardian and the headmaster of the school. LIFT has a unique aim of making them independent by creating meaningful and dignified job opportunities leading to economic independence.

This institution mainly focuses on the holistic development of the individuals. It includes physical, psychological, emotional, social and moral well being of the individuals. The management, teaching and non-teaching staff work with commitment and dedication to optimize the full potential and capabilities of the persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a mark of their diligent work and co-operation, this institution has placed six of its children in private companies. Through their continuous effort, they have instilled self - esteem, confidence and workmanship in the minds of these disabled children. They are now christened as special employees.
